Long Distance Friendship

Saying goodbye to one of my best friend’s was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Knowing that I wasn't going to see her, hug her or go out with her anymore was devastating and knowing that she wouldn't be back for a whole year was even worse.

We all have that one member of our friendship group that says the stupidest/dumbest/funniest things in the world and has everyone in stitches laughing at them. Katie was that friend. Hang on. Why am I talking about her as if she’s died? Let me rephrase that - Katie still IS that friend – only in much smaller doses now.

Katie moved to Perth, Australia on 26th May 2013 to work as an Au Pair (posh word for Nanny). It doesn't sound that long ago but it sure does seem it! She is currently living with an Australian family – Mum, Dad and two gorgeous young children who are so lovely and seem very happy to have her. I honestly don’t know how she plucked up the courage to go to a foreign country, on her own, to live with a family who she’d never met before and only spoken to a few times over Skype.

Skype has become our new best friend but because of the time difference (7 hours) I’m only able to speak to her on weekends. We usually speak on a Sunday morning when most of the girls are together after a night out. We keep her up to date on what’s gone on in the week and most importantly – what’s gone on the night before!

A (very, VERY) long-distance friendship is a true test of real friendship. Not having Katie around is something that I am slowly getting used to. I’ve only just stopped texting her to ask what she’s doing at weekend or if she fancy's a Nando’s (luckily for her, there are Nando’s in Australia!) I miss her a lot and can't wait for her to come home. I am so proud of her that she's done something different with her life and was actually brave enough to follow through with it - although I did think she was going to back out during the goodbyes at the airport. Katie is the loveliest person you could ever wish to meet and I am so glad that I get to call her my best friend.

Although - I wish she would stop sending me pictures like this whilst I'm sat at my desk in work!

Packing was a very traumatic experience
